Shrine's Hidden Hole
Dungeon you can enter after clearing Onigashima.
The idea is to capture monsters using an item called Monster Pot,
and progress through the dungeon by utilizing ally monster abilities.
You can bring up to 10 Monster Pots (empty or monster inside) into the dungeon,
and you'll be given 3 empty Monster Pots and an Escape Scroll when you enter.
Once you have some useful monsters like Mixer, Iai, and Armordillo Pop,
this dungeon becomes the easiest one among the post-game dungeons,
since you'll be able to synthesize a Leather Shield+99 (弟弟弟弟薬) with ease.
※ ※ ※ Warning ※ ※ ※
This dungeon loops endlessly after going down the stairs on 99F,
but Escape Scrolls are only available during the initial descent.
So if you want to go home at some point, you'll need to pick up the
Escape Scroll on 10F, 20F, or 99F before the dungeon loops.
If a Kappa throws the scroll at you, or you fall into a pitfall on 99F
before you obtain the scroll, you'll have to intentionally collapse or
select Suspend → Return to Village menu options to exit the dungeon.

Equipment can't be found on the ground, so you'll need Kengo family monsters
to obtain a Club and Leather Shield if you want equipment.
If you're lucky, you might obtain monster drops like Fish Spear,
Ironhead's Head, and Minotaur's Axe when you defeat certain monsters.
Mixer monsters don't spawn in this dungeon, and Synthesis Pots can't be found.
Capture a Mixer in a different dungeon and bring it with you if you want to synthesize.
Side note: Shrine's Hidden Hole (B) doesn't allow carry-in items,
so the Leather Shield+99 strategy can't be used.
This is the only dungeon where you can capture Queen Spiders.
If you want to complete Monster Kingdom, you'll have to descend to 60F to capture one.
She's the strongest ally monster in the game when you max her growth,
so it's definitely worth the effort.
Special Monster Houses can spawn on all floors.
so you might be placed in an unwinnable situation from the first floor if you're unlucky.
However, that also means you have a chance to capture high level monsters right away.
Don't give up if you happen to have one bad experience with a Special Monster House.
Basic Strategy
The most consistent strategy is to synthesize a Leather Shield+99 (弟弟弟弟薬).
Bring Mixer and Kengo family monsters, since they can't be found in this dungeon.
Armordillo Pop makes obtaining Otogiriso easy, and you'll want to bring Nigiri Boss
or Nigiri Master to ensure you have enough food, as it's a very time-consuming process.
Of course, you don't have to use this strategy, but since this wiki is aimed at helping players
of any skill level, the floor guide will assume the Leather Shield strategy is being used.
Keep in mind, you can level Shiren up by defeating monsters even if you don't have a weapon.
Weaken enemies with sluggy licks or Emperor Tusker's Quarter Staff, and have Shiren finish them.
Monster Pots / Ally Monsters
Monster Pot is the key item of this dungeon, so this section details its mechanics.
Monster Pots are guaranteed to hit the target when thrown at a monster,
so they can be used not only to capture monsters, but also as a way to completely
nullify a monster if you're cornered and need a way to escape the situation.
Ally monsters will grow stronger when they defeat enemy monsters,
increasing their HP and attack stats by a small amount.
Shiren doesn't gain experience points when ally monsters defeat enemies.
Ally monsters don't gain exp, but instead always grow by 1 each time they defeat an enemy.
It's possible to max their stats on 1F fighting Mamels and Chintalas until the growth limit.
You'll want to reach the growth limit beforehand on monsters with high potential
like Monsoon Dolls when attempting a deep run.
Most ally monsters use their special attack on the same turn in they are sent out.
You can reliably use Armordillo's tackle, Aqua Dragon's freezing breath, etc. on enemies.
Select the [Call] menu option to have monsters move toward Shiren and return to their pots.
Status conditions will be cured, and monsters will regenerate HP while inside their pots.
If you don't have an ally monster's pot on hand, they'll continue to wander around.
For the most part, keep ally monsters inside their pots to ensure their HP is topped up
when you don't immediately need their help, since they don't regenerate HP outside their pots.
You also risk losing them if you step on a Pitfall or Landmine while they're outside their pots.
It's good to keep multiple pots of important monsters as backup in case you lose one.
Throw an ally monster's pot at the ally monster to return them to their pot from a distance.
This technique is often used when they're about to be defeated,
or have been confused by Gazer or reflected magic.
Remember to check for traps on the way to pick up the ally monster's pot.
Ally monsters registered with Monster Kingdom will return to Monster Kingdom
in the event they're defeated, or if Shiren collapses in a dungeon and loses his items.
Their growth will be halved, but it shouldn't take long to raise them again.
Monsters that are not registered will be permanently lost, with one exception:
If a monster was outside their pot when Shiren collapsed, there's a chance they'll still be
around when you return to that location, so you can throw a new Monster Pot at them.
Talk to Oracle Gran to find out if there are any former ally monsters wandering around.
Important Monsters
Recommended monsters are highlighted in pink.
If you're unsure of what monsters to bring, you can't go wrong with these 10.
HP and Attack values are those at the growth limit.
Name | Lv | HP | Atk | Def | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Archdragon | 20 | 150 | 95 | 55 | Only breathes fire at targets in the same room. Use a Possession Staff to breathe fire at any enemy on the floor. Nice to wipe out all enemies at the start before exploring. |
Nigiri Master | 10 | 90 | 85 | 40 | Enemies defeated by Nigiri Master always drop a Large Onigiri. Use this ability to increase your max fullness to 200% early on. Doesn't have high stats, so don't let it fight stronger enemies. |
Hyper Gazer | 15 | 115 | 93 | 55 | Confuses a target, making them unable to aim or use special attacks. Can be a better option than Monsoon Doll depending on the situation. |
Porkon | 20 | 140 | 100 | 63 | Tosses stones at targets within 10 tiles, including underwater ones. Doesn't always use its special attack, so it can be a bit unreliable. The stones arc, so they never hit Shiren or ally monsters. |
Kengo | 15 | 57 | 64 | 19 | Flings Leather Shields from enemies. Look for shields with upgrade values to make a Leather Shield+99. Low HP and defense, so be careful that it doesn't get defeated. |
Iai | 15 | 95 | 114 | 48 | Bring Iai instead of Kengo if you want to strengthen a Club too. Avoid Shihan, since flinging No Control Bracelets slows things down. |
Venom Sluggy | 40 | 145 | 83 | 40 | Sharply lowers a target's attack power with its special attack. It never divides when it receives damage as an ally. |
Tiny Phoenix | 10 | 95 | 33 | 29 | Occasionally restores 50 HP to Shiren or an ally monster. Tiny Phoenix has low stats, so don't leave it out too long. Particularly useful if there's an Archdragon on the current floor. |
Lashagga | 5 | 103 | 73 | 63 | Attacks 3 times per turn, and has higher attack than Typhoon. Wins most encounters as long as it's a 1-on-1 fight. |
Bellthoven | 10 | 100 | 65 | 40 | Summons 3 ally monsters from your inventory in a single turn. It always selects the first 3 monsters from the top. |
Armordillo Pop | 10 | 95 | 87 | 37 | Makes an enemy drop an item with its special attack. Useful for knocking back a monster to gain some distance. Low stats, so keep it inside its pot unless you need its special attack. |
Monsoon Doll | 50 | 185 | 145 | 50 | Seals an enemy, making them unable to use their special attack. High growth limit, and has stats among the highest when maxed. |
Kamikaze | 5 | 100 | 43 | 55 | Triple speed and attacks 3 times per turn. Use Kamikaze if you don't like Typhoon passing through walls. |
Typhoon | 5 | 133 | 68 | 66 | Triple speed, attacks 3 times per turn, and passes through walls. Call it back so that it doesn't wander too far away. Excellent as a counter to enemy Typhoons. |
King Tusker | 15 | 85 | 65 | 19 | Seals an enemy from a distance, stopping the use of special attacks. Useful ability but low stats, so it's a bit difficult to use. |
Monarch Tusker | 10 | 86 | 62 | 26 | Slows an enemy from a distance. Great ability but low stats, so it gets defeated easily. |
Emperor Tusker | 5 | 140 | 113 | 70 | Reduces an enemy's HP to 1/4 of its current value from a distance. |
Gigahead | 5 | 150 | 135 | 71 | Attacks an enemy up to 3 tiles away in a straight line. Be careful not to stand between the ally Gigahead and its target. |
Escargon | 50 | 169 | 75 | 40 | Have it lead the way in hallways as a magic reflecting shield. Nice on floors where King Tusker, Gazer, Sheep Priest, etc. appear. |
Mixergon | 5 | 146 | 73 | 52 | Required to synthesize equipment. The items it ate vanish when it returns to its pot, so make it trip first. Swing a Balance Staff or use a Possession Staff with Armordillo. |
Snacky | 50 | 56 | 51 | 1 | Useful for capturing high level monsters early on. Don't bother maxing its growth. |
Pako Hammer | 10 | 105 | 85 | 40 | Destroys visible traps on the ground. Water Pots and Trap Remove Scrolls can't be found in this dungeon. |
Gazelle Pope | 10 | 117 | 85 | 55 | Halves an enemy monster's level. Particularly useful during the second half of the dungeon. |
Water Shinryu | 50 | 150 | 150 | 60 | It can't move on land, so use it as a stationary cannon. Its breath attack deals 25 damage and freezes the target for 1 turn. Can also be used as a wall, and has the 2nd highest attack stat. |
Demon Scorpion | 5 | 80 | 57 | 24 | Slows down a target by 1 stage. Low stats, don't let it wander around outside of its pot. |
Stun Scorpion | 5 | 140 | 138 | 73 | Paralyzes an enemy, making them unable to act for 1 turn. Similar function to Water Shinryu, but it can move on land. However, it doesn't have the range of Water Shinryu. |
Boulder Beast | 5 | 130 | 117 | 71 | Special attack knocks an enemy away and paralyzes them. Great ability to have if you decide that you need some space. |
Queen Spider | 120 | 770 | 390 | 30 | Strongest ally monster in the game, thanks to its high growth limit. Spawning 3 ally Armor Spiders isn't great, but its stats make up for it. |
Many of these monsters are easier to find in Shuten trails, Onigashima, and Sealed Room.
Enter this dungeon and read the Escape Scroll to obtain Monster Pots that can be used elsewhere.
There are many ways to make a monster level up, including throwing Happy Grass (Grass Tosser),
have it defeat a possessed monster (Possession Staff), feed the monster a Snacky (or Riku), etc.
Monsters to look for in this dungeon would be Queen Spider, Taur, Tiny Phoenix, and N'dubba.
Special Monster Houses in this dungeon offer a nice chance to capture high level monsters.
Other Items
Shiren's offensive capabilities are limited, so it's easy to collapse if you start in a Monster House.
You might be unable to send out ally monsters or summon shadows with a Shadow Scroll
if the number of characters is at the current floor's limit due to a Monster House being present.
Keep items like Swift Grass, Warp Grass, Swap Staff, and Sanctuary Scroll on hand at all times.
Floor Guide
1-10F
Feed Snacky to a Pit Mamel, and then defeat the Cave Mamel to get Shiren up to level 8~9.
Use allies like Monarch Tusker to weaken it, and then have Shiren get the last hit.
It'd also be good to increase max fullness to 200% using Nigiri Master.
Afterward, use Armordillo Pop to hunt for Possession Staff, Otogiriso, and Revival Grass.
Once you have a stock of these items, use Iai to gather Clubs and Leather Shields.
Go ahead and start synthesizing the Clubs and Leather Shields using Mixergon,
but be sure to fill the Leather Shield's slots with 弟 before combining other Leather Shields.
Next, collect more Otogiriso to increase Shiren's max HP. (400 or so is ideal)
Antidote Grass can't be found, so avoid Sluggy (3~5F) and Scorpion (8F) special attacks.
That said, you can restore strength by intentionally collapsing if you have Revival Grass.
Shiren can get by without fighting thanks to ally monsters, so don't worry about it too much.
Be careful not to lose monster pots due to Armordillo and Armordillo Bro (5~6F).
It's best to carry a Balance Staff at all times to prevent accidents.
Stand between two Armordillo Bros and have one defeat the other with knockback damage,
and then have Shiren defeat the Armordillo Pop to gain 700 experience points.
Beware of Zaloklefts (5~8F), as they can steal ally monster pots and go underwater.
Use Monsoon Doll or Hyper Gazer to stop them from being able to steal items.
You shouldn't have much trouble, since they're always asleep when they spawn.
Gazer (6~8F, 10~15F, 39~47F, 60~75F) is one of the most dangerous monsters
if you keep the starting Escape Scroll on hand, since its hypnosis can force you to read it.
The best prevention is to discard the starting Escape Scroll and pick up the one on 99F,
but a Vexing Kappa can throw the 99F Escape Scroll at you to ruin your day if you're unlucky.
Nigiri Morph (9~10F, 17~19F, 30~36F, 50~55F, 60~75F) is also extremely dangerous,
as it can transform ally monster pots into Large Onigiri.
Seal it or have an ally monster be the one to fight it.
Have an ally monster walk ahead of you in hallways to avoid surprise attacks.
11-21F
Your equipment should be pretty strong by now, so you shouldn't have trouble.
Continue to strengthen your equipment.
Dangers include Nigiri Morph (17~19F), Patient Bag (19~21F), Tiger Hurler (19~21F),
and Green Zalokleft (19~21F).
Patient Bag's explosion will one-shot ally monsters, so always have Shiren fight them.
Likewise, Tiger Hurler can toss ally monsters onto Landmines to one-shot them.
Green Zaloklefts can steal ally monster pots, so again, seal or confuse them to prevent theft.
This range is great for leveling Shiren up.
Just stand between two monsters and have one defeat the other.
Horse Emperor (3100), Gigahead (3150), Cranky Tank (2300), Bear Borg (2500) are nice options.
They're powerful, but your equipment should be quite strong by now, so it should be doable.
Use ally monsters to weaken them beforehand if you're concerned.
It's ideal to reach level 40 with 400+ HP by 30F at the latest, because Archdragon appears.
22-60F
Shiren's equipment, level, and max HP should be pretty solid at this point.
You can resupply items using Armordillo Pop instead of searching for items on the ground,
so if feel you have enough Revival Grass and other items, start rushing to the stairs.
However, if you weren't able to prepare as planned, you'll want to take things a bit slower.
Monsters only get stronger as you descend, but that can be used to your advantage.
Capture monsters and send them out right away, using them as decoys while you rush stairs.
Another option is to have them walk ahead of you in hallways as disposable shields.
This protects important monster pots from surprise Gazers, Nigiri Morphs, and Gyandoras.
Archdragon (30~59F) makes an appearance.
You'll be fine if you have a shield with 5 弟 (Otogiriso) seals and have increased your max HP.
If you're still worried, Tiny Phoenix can be used to restore Shiren's HP.
Capture an Archdragon to help ensure you're able to pick up the Escape Scroll on 99F.
If you have an Archdragon and a Possession Staff, you can wipe out Vexing Kappas
on 99F before they get a chance to throw the Escape Scroll.
Other monsters include Nigiri Morph and Nigiri Master (30~36F, 45~57F, 60~75F),
Gazer, Super Gazer, and Hyper Gazer (25~31F, 39~47F, 60~90F),
Rancor Sluggy and Venom Sluggy (32~40F, 39~47F).
Just assume that you'll run into one of them when walking in hallways.
Gyandora (50~79F) also makes an appearance.
If it plucks an ally monster pot, the pot's size will be reduced to 0 and the ally will be lost.
Again, have an ally monster walk ahead of you in hallways to avoid surprise attacks.
Iron Zalokleft (51~53F) can steal equipped items as well as ally monster pots,
so don't let it use its special attack.
60F~
Queen Spider (60~99F) makes an appearance.
She can only be captured in this dungeon, so don't forget to do so for Monster Kingdom.
If your goal was to capture her instead of reaching 99F, go ahead and read an Escape Scroll.
If you discarded your Escape Scroll for safety against Gazers, you'll need to descend to 99F.
Be warned - if a Vexing Kappa throws the scroll at you or you fall into a Pitfall on 99F,
you won't be able to escape from the dungeon alive.
Eat Sight Grass or use direct attacks to check for traps one step at a time inside rooms.
Immediately read a Shadow Scroll if you see both red and blue dots on the map at the start.
Send out an Archdragon and control it using a Possession Staff to wipe out all enemies,
and then search for the scroll while breathing fire to clear the floor every so often.
Archdragons in Shiren 2 aren't very strong compared to other games in the series,
so be careful of powerful monsters like Typhoon.
